Ara* and Milad* are 18-month-old twins who live with their mother Fatima* 21 and two older siblings in Afghanistan. The children are both unwell and weak and Fatima* has recently sought medical help for little Ara*. Ara* was found to be suffering from Severe Acute Malnutrition and provided her with therapeutic food.
Ara’s* father no longer lives with them and Fatima* has been caring for the children alone. She does not have any income and has moved back in with her father Abdul*, 60. Abdul* has a large family himself and struggles to provide for everyone. Fatima* and her four children live in one room in the already crowded home.
Now the weather is getting colder, Fatima* says she can’t afford to care for her children. They are unwell but she hasn’t got the money to take them to hospital. She says that people have offered her money to buy her children from her, but she has refused.
Save the Children has provided Ara* with therapeutic food and has also given the family a kit to help them get through the oncoming winter.
